Winter Project: Faster at 40

Turning 40 and Going All-In: My Winter Fitness Project

As I approach my 40th birthday this February, I’ve been reflecting on the strides I’ve made in my golf game and fitness. Over the years, I’ve made progress, but consistency has sometimes been lacking, and I’ve never truly tested my limits. I’ve seen benefits in my game, but now I want to take it a step further—not only to explore what’s possible with my golf swing but to build habits that will keep me active and fit for years to come.

With a 4-year-old, a 2-year-old, and a third child on the way in April, I know how easy it can be to slip into unhealthy habits, especially around diet and exercise. While this program is designed to see what I’m capable of with my driver, it’s also about creating and ingraining the routines I’ll need to stay strong and energized as my kids grow up—and to keep playing golf at the level I want for as long as possible.

My Goal and Winter Training Plan

With fewer chances to play golf this winter, I have a unique window to go all-in on my fitness and work on translating those gains into clubhead speed. My goal for this winter is to see if I can break 190 mph ball speed—a number I’ve never come close to achieving. My best so far is around 181 mph, so breaking 190 would be a new benchmark and a fun challenge to work toward.

Creating that speed requires three key components: strength, speed training, and technique.

  1. Strength: To create the speed I want, I need to be stronger and more explosive. For that, I’ll be following the Fit-for-Golf program. This program is organized into phases, and I’ll be starting from the beginning. I’ll begin with the Mass phase for 12 weeks, then transition into the Force program, and finally the Velocity program.

  2. Speed Training: For speed work, I’ll use The Stack System. This speed-training club creates a personalized training program and adapts it continually using AI technology. What I love about both Fit-for-Golf and The Stack is the ability to track and monitor progress—and the flexibility to train without needing to be on a course or during daylight.

  3. Technique and Skill: Technique will also be essential to ensure I’m as efficient and powerful as possible. I’ll be using some of my tech tools to monitor my swing and make necessary adjustments along the way. I’ll dive deeper into these aspects as I continue my training.

Tracking Progress and Sharing the Journey

I’ll be tracking my progress from a baseline of my current speed and power, and I’ll be sharing updates along the way. My aim is not only to document the physical results but also to share insights from the process, showing what can be achieved with a commitment to growth.

Looking Ahead

This winter project is as much about testing my mental discipline as it is about physical results. I want to establish habits that will support me in life and on the golf course for years to come. I hope this journey inspires others who want to improve their game or explore their potential when they fully commit.

Stay tuned for updates, and let’s see where this winter takes us!
